About

The Seagull On The Bund

The Seagull On The Bund sits on Huangpu Road in Hongkou, a short walk from the Bund's promenade and the city's most photographed skyline. The 4-star property blends old-fashioned English-style furnishings with the practical needs of a modern traveller—free Wi-Fi, a restaurant, a bar, and a convenience shop are all on site.

Guests consistently mention the location: the riverfront position puts the Oriental Pearl Tower and Pudong's towers in sight, and the hotel is close enough to walk to sightseeing and shopping. The staff is frequently praised for its service, from flagging down taxis to offering directions. Rooms are clean and well kept, with some windows opening for fresh air.

In brief

What works, what to weigh

+

Strengths

3 reasons to book
  • River-facing location with skyline views — Rooms and public areas overlook the Huangpu River and Pudong's skyscrapers, with several guests calling out the night view of the Oriental Pearl Tower.
  • Friendly, helpful staff — Guests repeatedly note that staff go out of their way—calling taxis, giving directions, and speaking English well.
  • Classic charm and clean comfort — The old-fashioned English-style furniture and well-kept rooms with daily housekeeping give the hotel a distinct personality.

Worth weighing

3 to weigh
  • Room windows may disappoint view-seekers — One reviewer noted that the windows in their room were dirty and couldn't open fully, obscuring the view they'd booked for.
  • Dining doesn't match the setting — A guest advised coming for the views rather than the food, though the espresso machine coffee earned a nod.
  • Not for those who dislike vintage style — The deliberately old-fashioned decor won't suit every taste, and the dated feel may be a draw only for some.

“We loved staying here. The spot right on the river gave us great night views of the Oriental Pearl and the city. The old-fashioned English-style decor gave the place a lovely charm, and the staff were wonderfully helpful, even calling taxis for us. Our room was tidy, cleaned daily with fresh towels, and had AC, a mini-bar, and a safe. The restaurant and bar were lovely, and Wi-Fi worked well everywhere.”

“Located right on the Bund, the hotel shows off the river, the skyscrapers, and the working barges beautifully. Rooms are clean and bright, and some have windows that open for fresh air. The staff goes out of their way to help, even hailing taxis. It's near enough to the city centre for easy access to everything.”

“If you get a river-view unit, the view of the Bund and the Huangpu River is fantastic—definitely worth requesting. The building and facilities are very nice overall.”

The bottom line

For travellers who put location and views above all else, The Seagull On The Bund delivers on its promise—you're a few steps from the Bund's promenade with the Pudong skyline in sight. The trade-off is a hotel that wears its age on its sleeve, and a few practical quirks (window upkeep, restaurant food) may test some guests. But with a strong staff and clean rooms, it's a sensible pick for a first-timer in Shanghai.
